C, MONDAY, DECEMBER 27, 1948 Weather today (unofficial) around 17. Sumner Welles, former undersecretary of state, was found unconscious Sunday morning after he had been for a walk past mid night. Heart attack thought to be cause. Christmas tree caught on fire in Charlotte home and burned one man to death. . . Fiddlin’ Bui Hensley, noted fiddler of this section, who was sent to State prison for killing a man in self defense, was paroled by Governor Cherry Friday and is in Tryon for visit with G. Harrison Bri^ge Rtn. Uncle Bill has many friends this section who will rejoice to know that he is back in his moun tains. He said he lived in a thermal belt up in Buncombe County and that his cove was much warmer than the surrounding area. Visi tors to Tryon Sunday were amazed to see evidence of the thermal belt where they could see icy topped mountains and almost a straight line running along the side of the mountains where there was no ice. . . . Carroll P. Rogers will be in charge of the Tryon Kiwanis pro gram Tuesday at 1 p. m. at Oak Hall . . . Additional donations have come in to help pay for the street decorations as follows:. Mr. and Mrs. A. P. Wickham, Mrs. An -Continued on Back Page_ MRS. BETTY CAPPS Mrs. Elizabeth (Betty) Thomp son Capps, 81, widow of Benjamin Capps, died Saturday morning at her home on Grady Avenue. Mrs. Capps had been ill for sev eral months. She was a resident of this community for more than 50 years. Funeral services were held on Sunday at 2 p. m*. at the Tryon Methodist Church where Mrs. Capps was a member. Services were conducted by the Rev. John C. Vernon. Burial was in the Tryon cemetery. McFarland Funer al Home in charge. Survivir t are 7 daughters, Mrs. R. A. Leonard, Mrs. W, B. Arledge, Mrs. Mariel Patterson, Miss Mar gie Capps, Mrs. Joe Anderson and Mrs. Marvin Brendall, all of Tryon, and Mrs. Robert Carruth of Landrum; 3 sisters, Mrs. Rob ert Newman and Miss Montery Thompson of Saluda and Mrs. Rebecca Overman of Goldsboro; one brother, Mitchell K. Thomp son of Flat Rock; 11 grandchild ren and 11 great grandchildren. Pallbearers were Dr. C. W. Mc Call, Minter Barber, Marvin Ed wards, J. A. and L. C. Reynolds and B. E. Samples Jr. Honorary pallbearers were M. Waters, B. L. Ballenger, F. P. Bacon, C. P. Rogers, Coke Foster, Bob Adams, Tom Green. W. C. - Ward, Ralph Lawrence, Dr. M. C. Palmer, Dr. John Z. Preston, D. S. Blois, John Cowan, Herbert But ler, W. W. Creasman and G. I. Henderson. Movies will be shown at the Con gregational Church house Wednes day night at 7 o’clock to members of the Sunday school and their friends.
